THE ASSOCIATION

The Association’s policy is designed to meet the following objectives:

• Promoting the branded, standardized Greek wines produced by its members.
• Continued education and information of both professionals and wine consumers through events and seminars, intended to instill correct attitudes and perceptions about wine.
• Protecting and promoting the geographical indications and designations of origin, as well as the indigenous varieties of the vineyards of Northern Greece.
• Supporting Greek cultural heritage and local activities centered around vineyards and winemaking.
• Contributing to the establishment and enforcement of an effective statutory and legal framework for the viticultural and winemaking sector.
• Promoting strategic and business planning for Greek wine.
• Participating in and collaborating with international corporations and organizations.

Through the initiative and exclusive support of the Association’s members, three powerful and well-established institutions were created:

• The Wine Roads of Northern Greece
  A comprehensive wine tourism network featuring visitable wineries and recommendations for accommodation, dining, local products, alternative activities, and points of tourist interest. This network paved the way for the development of wine tourism offerings in Greece, establishing wine tourism as an integral part of the country’s overall tourism product. It also introduced two annual nationwide wine tourism events: Open Doors and the celebration of World Wine Tourism Day.
• The Thessaloniki International Wine & Spirits Competition (www.tiwc.gr)
  This prestigious competition involves wineries primarily from Greece and Cyprus, along with other wine-producing countries, and features wine tasters and judges from around the world, including distinguished Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers.
  After 23 years of successful operation, and with its primary goal the promotion of branded Greek wine and spirits, the competition has been renamed to the Thessaloniki Wine & Spirits Trophy. It takes place annually with the support of the Ministry of Rural Development & Food and all the wine-related organizations in Greece.
• “VorOina”
  A wine and spirits tasting event organized by the Association “Winemakers of North Greece”. This event is held annually in Thessaloniki and Athens, with occasional editions in other cities in Greece and abroad. Popular among the general public, these events are often accompanied by smaller thematic activities focused on wine education and tasting.
